Spontaneous Healing (Su) – Mai can channel stored spell energy into healing spells that he did not prepare ahead of time. Mai can “lose” any prepared spell that is not an orison in order to cast any cure spell of the same spell level or lower, even if he doesn’t know that cure spell.
Hex, Healing (Su) – Mai can soothe the wounds of those he touches. This acts as a cure moderate wounds spell (3d8+6). Once a creature has benefited from the healing hex, it cannot benefit from it again for 24 hours.
Hex, Ward (Su) – Mai can use this hex to place a protective ward over one creature. The warded creature receives a +2 deflection bonus to AC and a +2 resistance bonus on saving throws. This ward lasts until the warded creature is hit or fails a saving throw. Mai knows when a warded creature is no longer protected. Mai can have only one ward active at a time. If he uses this ability again, the previous ward immediately ends. Mai cannot use this ability on himself.

A short, slightly stooped, middle-aged man with a tanned and creased face, grey-streaked beard and mustache, and friendly smile, Mai dresses in simple country garb and robes, complete with a typical conical straw hat, and sturdy wooden sandals strapped to his feet. He carries a gnarled wooden walking staff in one hand, and his bag of meager personal effects, alchemical components, and reagents slung over his shoulder and supported by the other. Mai’s forearms bare several faded tattoos of fanciful creatures – twining dragons and ki-rin.
Mai often says little unless spoken to directly, and can often be rather enigmatic in his responses – typical Dragon behavior. Still, he can be considered downright friendly and open by Dragon standards, willing to answer questions and offer advice – even if his replies aren’t nearly as forthright and helpful as they could be. He will often hum low, pleasant, wordless tunes while working brewing his concoctions. Mai also never ignores those in need of help, working to heal the sick and injured, even among the eta class – a rarity for many shugenja.
Mai is a pacifist, and will not fight another living being – he possesses only a few spells by which he can defend himself, and they are not often prepared. While willing to defend himself, he will not take a life.
Mai is never seen without his devoted rat companion, named Kyo, somewhere nearby. Kyo can often be found either perched on Mai’s shoulder or peeking out from the above the folds in Mai’s robes, where he rides. In the evenings, the little animal can be found assisting his master in his preparations of brews and potions, carrying small components as needed and “speaking” to Mai as the two work together.
Mai is a member of the Shurai vassal family of the Tamori family of the Dragon clan. Though Mai is considered a shugenja due to his healing skills and expertise with water magic, he chose to forgo his duties as a resident priest and instead took up the lifestyle of a travelling alchemist, acupuncturist, and hedge healer, becoming more akin to a monk. While often afforded respect where he goes, Mai is considered to be at the bottom of his social caste – lower than the samurai and other shugenja, but generally higher than that of the Bonge. Mai wandered for two decades, offering his services as needed – healing the sick, banishing minor spirits, consulting the Fortunes, and offering prayers and alchemical treatments to the afflicted.
At the time he was encountered, Mai had finally settled in his travels and joined a small Dragon village near Heaven’s Peaks, becoming the village’s local practitioner and resident holy man. He was inadvertently rescued by the newly-arrived heroes of Valleyhaven, who took it upon themselves to defend the residents of the village by intervening in an attack by mercenaries hired by the Lion clan. Mai’s life was saved by the heroes, and he therefore stepped in when Emerald Magistrates arrived on the scene, speaking on the heroes’ behalf against the testimony of the Lion commander, Matsu Oriko. Considering his life indebted to the heroes for saving his, Mai chose to follow them to the capital, and from there to wherever they might go, offering his knowledge, advice, skills, and services as needed as the heroes of Valleyhaven attempt to navigate their way through Azeshouri.
